Respecting the rights in family photographs, documents and stories, and reporting suspected infringement.

Effective and last updated:

Owning a copy is not always owning its copyright. Please contribute and share only material you have the right to use. Send copyright concerns to support@thefamilyarchive.app.

1. Ownership and permissions

Contributors retain the rights they hold in their original material. The Family Archive’s name, design, original site materials and software remain the property of their respective owners, subject to applicable open-source licenses. Our Terms of Service describe the limited permission needed to operate the archive.

A photograph’s copyright may belong to its photographer, and a letter or published work may have a different owner from the person holding the physical copy. Historical facts are distinct from protected expression. Attribution is valuable but does not replace permission. Before uploading, exporting or publishing, confirm that the work is yours, licensed for the intended use, in the public domain, or used under an applicable legal exception.

2. Report suspected infringement

If you are a rights holder or authorized representative, send a notice to support@thefamilyarchive.app with the subject “Copyright notice.” Please include:

  1. Your name and reliable contact information, and your authority to act for the rights holder.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work, or a representative list if multiple works are involved.
  3. The exact page links and enough detail to locate the material you believe infringes your rights.
  4. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the rights holder, its agent or law.
  5. A statement that the information is accurate and, under penalty of perjury where legally required, that you are authorized to act for the owner of the exclusive right involved.
  6. Your physical or electronic signature.

Do not send unnecessary identity documents or unrelated private family records. We may ask for clarification when the work or disputed material cannot be identified.

3. Review, removal and responses

We review sufficiently detailed complaints and may restrict or remove material while assessing a claim or to comply with law. Where appropriate, we notify the contributor and allow a response. We may share relevant parts of a notice with the affected contributor or legal advisers, limiting unnecessary personal information.

If you believe material was restricted in error, contact support with the relevant page or notice reference and evidence of your rights or lawful use. Where a statutory counter-notice process applies, we will explain its requirements and handle a valid notice under applicable law. A counter-notice can require disclosure of legal contact information and consent to a court’s jurisdiction; do not submit one without understanding those consequences.

This support address is our contact for copyright reports. Formal notices and any restoration of material are handled under the applicable legal process.

4. Repeated infringement and misuse

We may restrict or terminate accounts that repeatedly infringe rights in appropriate circumstances, considering valid reports, responses and applicable law. Knowingly making a false infringement claim or counterclaim can harm others and expose the sender to legal liability. Copyright complaints should address rights in a work; use Your Privacy Choices for exposure of personal information or contact support about other disputes.
